What is ART?

Every question is rhetorical, I almost find it completely absurd in why I have to write it, because I don’t have a deep meaning about art. I find it absolutely simple and art is something that makes me happy, something that makes me calm and also something that is repetitive in meanings.

What I have learned in my 18 years of living on earth is that art is anything that can be universally communicated. Like math and sports, they hold a certain a drive for me as an individual and that’s just the beauty of it. It being “Art.” More likely, “Art” has an ambiguous definition that Google can’t define to an emotional level.

Coming from Asian family, my parents chose to go away from tradition and gender roles. They chose a path of possibility and opportunity for me and my sisters to go above and beyond in my abilities of the mind, body, and soul. So, a takeaway of what “Art” is to me is that art is living everyday life and those few moments where you are able to sit for a few seconds and just become aware of your surroundings. “Art” is not clear or understanding but a variation of moments that people choose to perform it, to draw it, to live it, and sometimes to risk it all and do it all.

So, again, what is art? Art is everyone, everything, and everyone possible. OR Art is art, until someone calls it art.

Contradicting... but not limited..

What is DESIGN?

Like a research paper, there is a draft. The draft of making visual art is design. By using line, shape, texture, and other elements creates a final product. It’s the planning before the event, the practices before the game, or the rehearsals before the grand showcase. OR in the simplest cases the words you form to create a sentence before you even speak the sentence.

Like a filter,

In terms of an engineer, design is the code to a website such as the one you see now. In order to know the code, you must have experience and have an understanding of the syntactic structure of the code. YOU the coder/creator are trying to build a product from scratch and minimal resources: your imagination and your ideas.

What is CRAFT?

When I think about craft, I think about arts n’ crafts. Growing up, arts n’ crafts was a way for me, you, or the individual to create their own “crafts.” It’s not perfect, but is a product of your own hands, YOUR own work.

However, the more you play around with glitter, paint, and colored pencils, it can evolve into something more. Experimenting with brands, new mediums and new projects, craft becomes a lifestyle of the artist or a young athlete graduating from tee-ball to pros. Craft is the product of design and the drive for art as a whole.

When having a greater appreciation or motivation to continue in some random topic you choose to pursue is craft. If the “Design” is the drafting, practicing, and rehearsing, then “Craft” is the discovery of technique and trial of “Art.”
